Budgerigar
The
Budgerigar, better known as Budgie is a native from Australia. This small and
colorful bird is one of the smallest parrot species in the world. The first
species were recorded in 1805. The Budgie is the third most popular pet in the
world, after dogs and cats.
The
natural colors of Budgies are yellow and green. However with selective
breeding, they can be blue, grey, white and yellow. We can identify the sex of
these birds by the color of the cornea, which is blue for males and a white or
brown for female. The size of the Budgie is about 18 cm (7 in) and its average
lifespan is between 8 and 10 years.
The
Budgies are very vocal animals, they can learn to speak and whistle. Males and
females can learn to mimic and do simple tricks, although all the singing and
mimicry is more prevalent in males.
The
diet of the Budgies is based on seed mixture, fruits, vegetables, sprout, and
pellet. The seeds make up 50% of a Budgie's diet. Vitamins in form of fresh
fruits and vegetables are necessary for their healthy growth. Apples,
grapefruit, mango, nectarines, peaches, carrots, broccoli and spinach are
excellent source of vitamins for them. It is imperative to know that all the
fruits and vegetables should be fresh and well washed; also, the water inside the
cage must be continually refreshed to avoid the development of bacterias.
Budgies
are popular pets, their small size, brightly colored feathers and adorable
personality makes them excellent companions for bird lovers.
